Secretary of State Hillary Clinton highlighted the impact of women in society Monday while giving the commencement address at Barnard College.

The former New York Senator delivered her speech to the nearly 600 graduates of Columbia's women's college.

She urged the class of 2009 to incorporate public service in whatever they choose to do in the future. Clinton also told graduates they have the opportunity to better the lives of those in their community and people around the world.

"This is a future that women in the history of the world have never been able to imagine," Clinton said. "That you leave here empowered in a way that women and girls have never been before. It's exciting, but it's daunting. But I know you're up to it."

Clinton was awarded the college's highest honor, the Barnard Medal of Distinction.

Last week, the former First Lady delivered the NYU commencement address at Yankee Stadium.
