New York's senators are asking President Barack Obama to eliminate a federal law they say hampers investigation of gun crimes.

Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand were in Midtown yesterday to call for the elimination of the Tiahrt amendment, which requires the FBI to destroy records of gun buyer's background checks within 24 hours.

The senators say the information could help cut down on gun violence.

"Most of the crime guns come from a limited number of gun stores, a limited number of traffickers, and if we can find out who they are, we can go after them," said Schumer.

"What we want to do is give law enforcement the kind of tools they need to crack down on these gun traffickers and make sure we can stop this flow of illegal weapons into New York State," Gillibrand said.

Schumer and Gillibrand want the president to reinstate the 90-day retention period for background information which existed before the amendment was implemented in 2004.
