State lawmakers are trying to throw a hurdle in front of Mayor Bloomberg's pitch for a third term.
A State Senate committee narrowly approved a bill that would require a citywide referendum on a controversial term limit extension the city council passed in November, which allowed a previously term-limited Bloomberg to run again this fall.
Tuesday's bill already passed an Assembly committee, but it's still seen as unlikely to pass the full legislature and become law.
Bloomberg is fighting to get on the Republican ballot in November's mayoral race. He is not a member of any political party.
