Mayor Michael Bloomberg was among the nation's most generous philanthropists in 2008, according to The Chronicle of Philanthropy.

The journal's annual list says that the mayor donated $235 million to philanthropic causes last year.

Bloomberg donated to more than 1,200 groups associated with the arts, education and health care research.

His giving increased from 2007, when he donated $205 million.

Bloomberg ranked ninth overall on the list, behind two couples and six deceased philanthropists whose donations were stipulated in their wills.

The list was topped by another New Yorker: the late real estate queen Leona Helmsley, who bequeathed $5.2 billion in donations – most of which went to the dog-friendly causes.
