Governor David Paterson took a step towards making the state more eco-friendly Saturday by signing a bill to promote plastic bag recycling statewide.
The city already has a law requiring stores that occupy at least 5,000-square-feet, or have more than five locations in the city, to provide plastic bag recycling bins.
Those rules were threatened by proposed state legislation which would make the law apply only to stores that occupy over 10,000-square-feet.
Paterson's new bill makes the city law a state regulation, encompassing retail establishments of more than 10,000-square-feet or chains with more than five stores.
It also protects New York city's laws from being changed.
