Mayor Michael Bloomberg is scheduled to meet with members of the president-elect's transition team in Washington, D.C. today.
The mayor is discussing issues facing cities and meeting with the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Ahead of those meetings, the mayor introduced Randi Weingarten, the longtime city teachers’ union leader.
Weingarten was elected President of the American Federation of Teachers earlier this year. In an address to the National Press Club, she is discussing education and the economy.
Meanwhile, as the mayor asks all city agencies to make tough budget cuts, he is applying the knife to his own office.
Bloomberg has ordered a 10 percent cut in the number of people on his payroll, reducing his staffers from 521 down to 469.
Earlier this month, the mayor announced plans to cut the entire city work force by some 3,000 to help deal with a $4 billion deficit.
Most of the cuts are expected to be carried out by reducing the number of new hires at the Parks and Sanitation Departments and protective specialists at the Administration for Children's Services.
