Protesters rallied in Manhattan Friday against the city and state for cuts in funding for HIV-AIDS services.

Advocates took to the streets of Murray Hill to protest the cutting of $6 million from the city's fiscal 2009 budget, and the governor’s proposed new cuts and changes to Medicaid.

"The proposed cuts basically will make it so that it makes it a lot harder to prevent transmission and do good, effective work in our communities," said Tamara Santiago of Housing Works.

Earlier this month, the Centers for Disease Control released statistics saying more than 55,000 people are diagnosed with HIV each year, much higher than originally thought.
