A fleet of hydrogen vehicles made a pit stop at Central Park as part of a two-week road tour.
The cars are meant to educate people in 18 states about the benefits of hydrogen technology.
The makers of the cars are calling on Congress to create infrastructure to support the environmentally-friendly option. Officials say that will come if people run out and buy the cars.
"We want to be in a position where the market will drive those outcomes, and if consumers want hydrogen-driven cars, and that's the market, the infrastructure will follow that," said Tom Barrett of the U.S. DOT.
"They all have no carbon emissions at all, no CO2," explained Patrick Serfass of the National Hydrogen Association. "In the case of the fuel cell vehicle, there are absolutely zero emissions at all coming out of the tailpipe, just water vapor, clean enough to drink."
Currently, there are only 62 hydrogen-refueling stations in the country. Car makers say they will not put the new models into production until they are sure there will be spots to refuel them, but fuel producers say until there is demand they will not build more stations.
