City Council became the first city government group to take part in a community-supported agriculture program Thursday.
Members receive pre-purchased locally-grown fruits and vegetables.
Later, City Council passed a series of bills that will encourage city agencies to purchase more New York State and regionally-produced food.
"It may cost a tiny bit more, but it saves money in the end because it can stay longer in the schools. It can stay longer in the person’s home, and it's fresher," said Manhattan City Councilwoman Gale Brewer.
The measures establishes guidelines for city agencies to purchase more New York State food. Officials at City Hall said Mayor Michael Bloomberg will sign the bills.
