A new survey finds many New Yorkers continue to struggle to put healthy food on the table.

A report by the Food Bank for New York City found 37 percent of residents experienced difficulty affording food last year.

That number is down from a high of 48 percent at the start of the recession in 2008.

The Food Bank says while these results seem hopeful, some residents are only able to buy food by cutting back on their food intake.

The report found one in three New Yorkers reduced the quality or the amount of food they bought in 2010.

"Although the need or the insecurity has gone down slightly, we know that unemployment is still holding stead in the five boroughs at nine percent. So this is a jobless recovery. And what does that mean? Well without jobs without the proper income to support these families then we are going to see a lot of struggle into the future," said Carlos Rodriguez of the Food Bank for New York City.

The report is based on a poll conducted by the Food Bank and Marist College.

A total of 856 New York City residents were interviewed by phone in October.

The margin of error is 3.5 percentage points.
