The city reportedly wants to keep a closer eye on speeding drivers.
The New York Post says the New York City Police Department and transportation officials want cameras installed across the city to capture people going above the 30 mile an hour speed limit.
They say speeding is a factor in many of the worst crashes in the city. The cameras would work similar to red light cameras around the city, recording the license plate numbers of violators.
A ticket would be mailed to the car's registered owner.
However, the city could face a roadblock in Albany. The project needs approval from the New York State Legislature, which so far has shown little interest in authorizing speed cameras.
