Wal-Mart is asking the City Council to stop picking on the company.
Wal-Mart executives will boycott Wednesday's council hearing on the chain's plans to open its first store in the five boroughs.
In a letter to the council, a Wal-Mart spokesman questions why other chains – including Target, Kmart, and Costco, have all managed to open stores in the city without the same level of scrutiny.
City Council Speaker Christine Quinn says Wal-Mart's decision to "run away from an opportunity to sit in front of the Legislature of the city you say you want to be in speaks volumes."
However, in an effort to drum up support for its possible New York location, the retail giant has launched walmartnyc.com.
Wal-Mart is reportedly considering a site in East New York at the Related Companies' planned Gateway II shopping center.
Related does not need approval from the City Council to open the site.
