With the ninth anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks just two days away, supporters and opponents of a proposed Islamic community center and mosque are readying for a fight. NY1's Grace Rauh filed the following report.

The anniversary of September 11th is usually a quiet and solemn day in New York as families mourn loved ones killed in the terrorist attacks. This year, though, the fight over a planned Islamic community center and mosque two blocks from the World Trade Center site has prompted dueling protests scheduled for September 11, 2010 on either side of the proposed Islamic center.

"I feel it is my duty to my son to go there and let my voice be heard and let them know that I am not for the mosque," said Jim Riches, who lost his son in the September 11th attacks.

"These racists think they want to target Muslims. They are picking a fight with everyone," said pro-mosque protest organizer Larry Holmes.

Other New Yorkers -- on both sides of the bitter fight -- say it's inappropriate for political protests of any kind to be held on September 11th.

"For us, 9/11 is just going to be a day where everyone does their own mourning. Whatever they do. We felt that the protest just didn't feel right," said mosque opponent Andy Sullivan.

Saturday's demonstrations could turn into a chaotic circus if Thursday's press conference -- by the organizers of one of the protests -- is any indication of what's to come.

Police were on hand to keep foot traffic moving, while reporters and cameras swarmed the demonstrators.
