The Center for an Urban Future is looking into ways to bring more culture to street fairs, which have become staples of summer life in the city.
The group proposes getting rid of generic vendors selling tube socks and sausages, and adding more music and theater performances to better reflect the spirit of the neighborhoods hosting the fairs.
The mayor's office says it is working on improving street fairs.
Fewer fairs are being approved, in part to cut down on the cost of police overtime.
