City Council Speaker Christine Quinn has a new plan she hopes will nudge state lawmakers toward legalizing gay marriage.

According to the Daily News, Quinn wants the City Clerk to remind same-sex couples that they can legally get married in other states when they apply for domestic partnerships.

Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Washington, D.C. allow gay marriages, which are legally recognized in New York.

The State Senate rejected a gay marriage bill in December.

Last week, the City Clerk's office began performing marriage-like ceremonies for domestic partners.
