Governor Paterson is offering a compromise ethics bill to the state Legislature.

The new proposal would drop a requirement that would have forced elected officials to publicly disclose their law clients and income.

Instead, it would create a commission to weigh possible conflicts of interest stemming from those clients.

Paterson's proposal comes as state lawmakers are considering overriding his veto of ethics reform adopted by both the Senate and the Assembly.

Paterson says Democratic leaders have resisted his attempts to negotiate a compromise, but lawmakers blame the governor for refusing to work out a deal.
