After four days of fierce debate, the U.S. Senate passed the first piece of the health care overhaul legislation.
Senators passed an amendment that safeguards complete coverage of mammograms and other preventative screening tests for women.
The proposal follows a controversial suggestion by a federal panel that mammograms are not necessary for women younger than 50 years old.
An amendment to restrict abortion funding is also on the agenda.
As is legislation that attempts to cut about $460 billion from Medicare without hurting older Americans.
The AARP is backing democrats on the measure, saying the cuts will help eliminate waste and inefficiency.
Republicans claim seniors would lose some of their add-on benefits.
