State Democratic lawmakers said Friday they will attend Governor David Paterson’s speech on the state financial crisis next week, a day after some of their leaders
criticized it as a lecture and photo-op.
Paterson says Monday’s speech will aim to rally bipartisan support for addressing the state's current $3 billion budget gap.
Political observers say it is not looking likely that legislators will actually bring the governor's proposed spending cuts to a vote on Tuesday at special session. Both sides have been stuck on Paterson's call to cut health care and education funds.
On Friday, the comptroller's office once again said that gap could be even bigger than the governor's office is projecting – pegging the number as high as $4.1 billion.
Paterson has also placed the issue of legalizing gay marriage on the agenda. If it comes up for a vote, it would be the first time the State Senate has taken up the issue. The Assembly has twice passed such a measure, but many senators, including some Democrats, publicly say they are opposed to legalizing gay nuptials.
NY1 will be carrying the governor's speech to the state Legislature live on Monday at 3 p.m.
