Embattled Congressman Charles Rangel got a boost of support Thursday from a wide range of civic leaders.
They rallied on the steps of City Hall in his defense and called for the press and public to withhold judgement until the House Ethics Committee finishes its investigation.
"We do not live in a post-racial society and I think it's curious that as we have an African-American president and African-American chair of Ways and Means, arguably the two most powerful positions in the nation, we have this kind of virulent attack. So I am very concerned about that," said one Rangel supporter.
Rangel is under investigation following reports he did not pay taxes on his vacation home and used his congressional office to raise money for a research center named after him.
He has represented Harlem in Congress since 1971.
