On the eve of Election Day, the Democratic nominee for mayor urged all New Yorkers to head to the polls Tuesday in what he says is a closer race than what many are predicting. NY1's Grace Rauh filed the following report. The polls may indicate otherwise, but in the final sprint to Election Day, City Comptroller William Thompson insists he is going to pull off a huge upset.
"Late Tuesday night as the votes come in, we will shock the City of New York and send a message of real change for this city," Thompson said.
Such a win would, in fact, be a shocking turn of events.
The far-outspent Democratic nominee has trailed his billionaire opponent by double digits. Although he got a slight boost from some new numbers out Monday -- which show him narrowing the gap between himself and the mayor to 12 points with 50 percent of likely voters for the mayor versus 38 percent for Thompson.
"The polls and the polling that we have done indicates that this election is close," Thompson said.
Thompson is hoping to convince New Yorkers that their vote will count -- and could push him over the top -- if they go to the polls on Tuesday.
The goal is to talk to as many voters as possible and improve the turnout, which is expected to be low.
"We are going to have about 2,500 volunteers out on the street, over 100 elected officials. We are going to knock on approximately 75 to 100,000 doors tomorrow and make about 150,000 phone calls," said Thompson Campaign Get Out The Vote Director Nathan Smith.
Earlier in the day, Thompson sat down with NY1 and said he's been disappointed by the campaign his opponent has run.
"This is probably the most negative campaign this city has ever seen. Backed up by the most amount of money that has ever been spent in this nation for anything other than a presidential election," Thompson said.
Thompson says he thinks New Yorkers have been able to shut out the attacks from his rival. He also says that when he's out on the streets, people are positive and cheering him on.
