City Councilman Bill de Blasio is poised to become the next public advocate following his big win Tuesday night versus the man who formerly held the post. NY1's Michael Scotto filed the following report.

As one political career takes off, another one comes to end.

Brooklyn City Councilman Bill de Blasio beat Mark Green in the runoff race to become public advocate.

"As your public advocate, I will be your voice, and whenever your government is not there for you, I will stand up for you," de Blasio said.

De Blasio did not just defeat Green; he crushed him by more than 20 points, a humiliating loss for the former public advocate, who had hoped to resurrect his political career. Now Green insists this is really his last run for office.

"You'll be hearing from me then, but not in elective office. I leave that to politicians more skilled than I," he said.

De Blasio's win was made possible thanks to an aggressive campaign, waged with significant organizational support from unions and the Working Families Party.
The next public advocate will also have to campaign to keep the office alive. For months, calls have intensified to eliminate the position.

"I think it's going to be more important than ever. I think the people in this city want a strong public advocate, someone who will stand up to the mayor when he is wrong and work with him when he's right," said de Blasio.

De Blasio says the issues he would like address are education and poverty.

He faces a Republican opponent in November, but because Democrats far outweigh Republicans in the city, De Blasio is the heavy favorite to win.
