The Senate passed an amendment to a transportation appropriations bill yesterday which could allow Amtrak passengers to carry handguns in their checked baggage.

The Senate justified its passage as an effort to give train riders the same gun rights as airline passengers.

Air travelers are allowed to carry firearms in their checked bags, as long as they clear it with the airline and have their unloaded weapons in a locked case.

Amtrak previously allowed weapons on board, but restrictions were tightened after the September 11th attacks.

Weapons were completely banned after the Madrid train bombings.

Amtrak says it is worried that providing secure stowage for the firearms would take up the company's entire annual appropriation.

“Amtrak is very concerned that – under this amendment -- the company’s entire annual appropriation would hinge on Amtrak’s ability to provide secure stowage for firearms and ammunition in checked baggage," Amtrak says in a statement. "This mandate, should it survive the legislative process, would require considerable financial investment and administrative support in procedures and facilities for this sole purpose.”
