A federal appeals court ruled Friday that former Attorney General John Ashcroft can be held liable for detaining people as witnesses following the September 11th attacks.
The court found that Ashcroft can be sued for wrongfully detaining Abdullah Al-Kidd and others as witnesses.
Al-Kidd, a U.S. citizen, filed a lawsuit in 2005 after he was held for two weeks as a material witness, claiming his civil rights were violated.
He said Ashcroft used illegal government policy he created to arrest and detain people, particularly Muslim men and those of Arab decent.
