Governor David Paterson picked up some degree of support yesterday from an unlikely friend - the father of the man who may want to run against him next year.

At a news conference in Downtown Manhattan Wednesday, former Governor Mario Cuomo, seen above, refused to criticize the unpopular governor.

As he endorsed Brooklyn Councilman Bill de Blasio for city public advocate, Mario Cuomo was asked whether he would be "okay" with his son, State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, challenging Paterson in a Democratic primary.

The former governor took a long pause before answering.

"I don't know. I'd have to know a whole lot more," said Mario Cuomo. "What I'm hoping happens is that this all works out very nicely and everybody's happy in the end."

Andrew Cuomo is considering another gubernatorial run after an unsuccessful primary run in 2002 against former State Comptroller Carl McCall.

Mario Cuomo said Paterson is trying to help the state.
