Mayor Michael Bloomberg is making higher education a priority as he hits the campaign trail.

Speaking at the Borough of Manhattan Community College today, Bloomberg announced a plan to invest an additional $50 million over the next four years in community colleges.

The mayor said that community colleges help train people for higher-paying jobs in growing industries. He says that would move more New Yorkers into the middle class and that is integral to the economic success of the city.

The mayor says this in response to President Barack Obama's recent call to put more emphasis on community colleges.

"Community colleges really do have the power to help more Americans get through this recession and come out with better skills, ready to build new careers in good paying jobs," said the mayor. "New York City can and should lead the way in meeting the president's challenge and we will."

New York has the largest urban community college network in the country with six colleges and more than 81,000 students.
