Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney is apologizing for using a racial slur in an interview.
Speaking with City Hall Magazine, the Democratic lawmaker relayed a story about a phone call she received from someone attacking Senator Kirsten Gillibrand for supporting English-only education in Puerto Rico.
Maloney said the person told her that having that position was like saying "nigger" to a Puerto Rican. In a statement, Maloney calls the slur disgusting, and says she was only quoting someone else who said it.
Maloney is expected to announce soon that she will challenge Gillibrand in a Democratic primary next year.
