New York's senior Senator Charles Schumer says he will not try to stop Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney from taking on Senator Kirsten Gillibrand in a Democratic primary.
Schumer has already endorsed Gillibrand and says he fully supports her 2010 Senate bid.
But he says he will not ask Maloney not to challenge Gillibrand.
President Barack Obama reportedly persuaded Long Island Congressman Steve Israel not to enter the race.
Maloney's advisers say she plans to officially announce her candidacy in the coming weeks.
