Governor David Paterson's approval rating is showing a slight improvement.

A new Marist Poll shows 21 percent of voters think Paterson is doing an excellent or good job. That's up from just 19 percent in late April.

Of those polled, 39 percent rate his performance as fair, while 37 percent say he's done poorly.

As far as his handling of the State Senate situation, 43 percent of voters approve while nearly half disapprove. Eight percent aren't sure.

As far as his hopes for election, the governor is gaining some ground on a potential Republican opponent, Rudy Giuliani.

In a hypothetical matchup, the governor gets 37 percent of the vote, compared with 54 percent for the former mayor. In April, Paterson only got 32 percent, while 56 percent said Giuliani.

Just more than 1,000 registered voters across the state were surveyed for the poll, which was conducted last Tuesday through Thursday.

The margin of error is plus or minus three percentage points.
