The New York City Campaign Finance Board announced this afternoon that NY1 has been selected to sponsor several of the debates for this upcoming election season.

According to the release, NY1 will hold the first CFB primary and general election debates for mayor and the leading contender debates in the primary and general election for public advocate and city comptroller.

If there are any runoff elections in the primaries for any of those positions, NY1 will hold debates for those as well.

The mayoral primary debate will be held at the New York Public Library, main branch in Bryant Park. The mayoral general election debate will be held at El Museo Del Barrio in East Harlem.

While most details about the debates have been released, it is not yet known whether Mayor Michael Bloomberg will participate. As a self-financed candidate he is not required to do so, but is encouraged to take part.

"I really would urge participation by all candidates for office, even those who choose not to take public funding," said Steve Paulus, the regional vice president and general manager of Time Warner Cable's Local News Division. "I think it's very important that the public get an opportunity to see all candidates in these venues."

Bloomberg did not take part in the NY1 debate four years ago at the Apollo Theater.

Today, Bloomberg said that while he is not likely to participate in the primary debate, he would be "happy" to attend debates ahead of the the general election. He did not specify how many of the debates he would attend.

NY1 is joined in its sponsorship by our sister station, NY1 Noticias, the New York Daily News, WNYC Radio, the Citizens Union, and NY1's parent company, Time Warner Cable.

In addition to airing the debates in English and Spanish, various channels will air the events in Korean, Mandarin, Cantonese, Russian, Punjabi, Hindi and Greek.
