New York has become the first state in the country to allow shoppers to use checks from the Women, Infants and Children Program at farmers' markets.

The move is part of Governor David Paterson's effort to make organic, fresh foods more affordable to low-income shoppers.

The new program specifically allows mothers in WIC to use their monthly checks to buy fresh local produce and goods at farmers' markets throughout the state.

Research finds the presence of fresh food options in communities helps folks to maintain a healthy weight.
