Dr. Thomas Farley starts his new job today as the city's health commissioner.
Farley, an infectious-disease specialist from Tulane University in New Orleans, is taking over for Dr. Thomas Frieden, who was tapped by President Barack Obama to head the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
On his first day, Dr. Farley attended the annual "Fit City 4" conference at the American Institute of Architects in Greenwich Village. The event is devoted to using urban and building design to promote active living.
But Farley says it's getting harder for New Yorkers to incorporate exercise in their daily routine.
"During the last 60 years, what's happened is we've engineered physical activity out of our lives," he said. "We introduced a number of labor-saving devices and what they've done is they've prevented physical labor, which like a lot of things, seem like a good idea at the time, but now we're seeing health consequences of that."
The city's transportation commissioner is promoting active design guidelines like putting in roughly 200 bike lanes throughout the five boroughs.
