A senior member of the Obama administration is claiming that a better than-expected jobs report, one that sent key stock market indicators to their highest level in nearly four years, is evidence that White House economic policies are working. NY1’s Errol Louis filed the following report.
Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to the president, on Friday visited New York City, where she was keynote speaker at a White House conference on women in business.
In an exclusive interview with NY1, she said the numbers prove the president's tax cuts and stimulus program have been a success.
"We're here on a perfect day, we had terrific job numbers as you know that were announced today, we now have had 23 consecutive months of private sector job growth, 3.7 million jobs, our country is moving in the right direction,” said Jarrett.
But Washington politics, she said, could still hurt the economic recovery.
"I think there is a great deal of frustration out there about what’s going on in Washington. And it does add to the uncertainty, and that does have a destabilizing impact,” said Jarrett.
NY1’s Errol Louis also talked with Jarrett about the controversy surrounding Susan G. Komen for the Cure, which cut off funding for breast cancer screening to Planned Parenthood only to reverse that decision following a national uproar. Jarret said the speed of the grassroots reaction to the Komen controversy was an example of the sort of energized communications the Obama team hopes to create about its successes in job creation.
“I am impressed by how quickly the social media is working these days. One of our challenges as we try to get our messages out is to figure out how do you really penetrate, and there’s so many social medias that are really activated, and I think that’s what happened in this instance, and we want to harness that energy and make sure that all the terrific work that the president is doing gets out to the media as well,” said Jarrett.
As the president’s trusted adviser knows, communication is more urgent than ever with just seven months to go before Election Day.
