New York's first openly gay state assemblyman tied the knot with his long-time partner of 31 years on Sunday.

Hundreds gathered at Guastavino's restaurant under the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge in Turtle Bay, Manhattan to see Assemblyman Danny O'Donnell and John Banta exchange vows.

O'Donnell has been one of the state's most vocal advocates for marriage equality, introducing five bills to legalize same-sex marriage.

Those invited included members of the assembly, Governor Andrew Cuomo and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn.

Guests said the event was a long time coming.

"I'm very, very happy for this couple. They fought incredibly hard to make it happen," said Manhattan Senator Thomas Duane, who is also openly gay.

"It's a joyous occasion, two people that love each other are going to get married in the State of New York," said Manhattan Assemblyman Keith Wright.

Another high profile same-sex wedding is expected soon, as Quinn plans to marry her partner in the spring.
