The commissioner of the Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities has died.
Matthew Sapolin led the office for more than nine years.
He lost his eyesight to cancer when he was five years old and battled the disease ever since.
That didn't stop him from being co-captain of the wrestling team at New York University. He also played the drums, guitar, and chess.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Sapolin was instrumental in assuring the rights and needs of people with disabilities were included in all city initiatives and that he will be deeply missed at City Hall.
Flags at all city buildings are being lowered in his honor.
He leaves behind a wife and two children.
Matthew Sapolin was 41 years old.
