Former State Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno was sentenced Thursday to two years in prison and three years' probation for two counts of fraud.

Bruno, 81, was convicted last year of using his office to steer contracts and grants to businesses that paid him at least $3 million.

He will be out on bail until the state supreme court rules on three pending honest services cases that will affect his case and void his convictions.

"I'm very unhappy with the result here," Bruno told reporters outside the Albany courtroom.

Prosecutors had wanted Bruno to serve for eight years in federal prison, while the judge said that the defense lawyers' request for just probation was lenient of a sentence.

"We respect the sentence and trust that it reflects the seriousness of the offense, promotes respect for the law, provides just punishment and deters others from corruption by emphasizing that no one is above the law," said U.S, Attorney for the Northern District of New York Richard Hartunian.

Speaking in the court for 45 minutes, the former 13-year Republican leader of the State Senate said he regretted not testifying on his own behalf.

The judge rebuked Bruno, saying that the former politician had committed a crime and was reluctant to accept it due to his public person.

Bruno previously agreed to pay $280,000 in restitution.

The supreme court will rule on its cases by June 28.
