Changes to the Department of Education's school trip policies could be on the horizon, following an investigation into a 2008 trip that left a Manhattan high school track athlete paralyzed.

The city's Special Commissioner of Investigation for city schools says Stuyvesant High School assistant track coach Erin Taylor's trip to Dartmouth College was unauthorized.

It found Taylor violated several DOE policies, including not having the OK from her principal and not using permission slips. Investigators say Taylor regularly took female track team members on unauthorized trips.

The report recommends action be taken against Taylor, the school's athletic director, and the team's head coach, who the DOI says knew about the trips. It also calls for a revised school trip policy or stricter compliance with the current one.

Last year, Taylor took Stuyvesant's team along with another school's track team to Dartmouth for a track meet. They got into a car accident on their way to the school.

Valerie Piro, a Stuyvesant High School student, was paralyzed as a result.

Both the city and DOE are part of a $300 million lawsuit filed by her family last year.

NY1 tried to reach the family's attorney for comment.

A DOE spokesperson says Taylor resigned shortly after the accident.
