Senator Charles Schumer has introduced a bill designed to encourage city school districts to switch to hybrid buses.

Schumer released a report during a visit to P.S. 234 in Manhattan Thursday showing the impact of rising fuel costs on schools.

According to the report, the city will spend more than $50 million to operate its 6,400 school buses. He says many districts have already reduced or cancelled bus service this year. Schumer wants the government to help fund the purchase of more fuel-efficient hybrid buses.

“If New York City switched its entire fleet to hybrid buses, the city would save $3,300 per year, per bus, canceling out all the fuel prices we have seen, the fuel price increases,” said Schumer.

Schumer's bill would give a federal tax credit for each hybrid bus purchased by school districts.
