Schools Chancellor Joel Klein helped students in Central Park gather information and prepare to go back to school Saturday.

He led the outdoor event "Family Back to School kickoff," which provided information about everything from the school lunch program to special education.

"The message of today's event is we want to make sure our parents are engaged, fully involved in our schools," said Klein.

Klein also reminisced on the days when he prepared to go back to school.

"I always used to come back with mixed feelings," said Klein. "I was sorry that summer was over, but I was kind of excited to know who my new teacher was. It was always a big deal, who was going to be in my class."

Parents appreciated the attention and easily-acquired information.

"I'm very serious about education, it's the only way for you to succeed in this world,” said parent Stephanie Shaw. “I love this event. It supports the children and I think it's wonderful."

"Make sure you stay involved with your kids' school," said parent Sue Nieves, "because if you don't, anything can happen. Anything can happen to your kids, and if you don't know what's going on, you'll be the one lost at the end of the year."

Children at the event had a range of things to look forward to this school year.

"I'm excited about going back to school. I’m excited to see all my friends again and stay with my teachers," said seventh-grader Sammy Hernandez.

"Art, science, seeing friends again. Going back to school is fun," said third-grader Bahiya Craig.

"The thing I like about school is I like art, because my art
teacher teaches me how to draw," said fourth-grader Isaiah Cannon.

"I want to go back to school, because this summer's been boring," said seventh-grader Earnestine Garmon. "And I'm going to start going to the library a lot."

Students have a couple more weeks to prepare, since the school system's first day of school is Tuesday, September 2.
