A Bronx sixth grader is speaking out about a run-in with her teacher that has the teacher facing charges.

Bridget Aranza, 12, says the fight happened last Thursday as she was leaving school to go to a doctor's appointment.

She says when she went to pick up a notebook, her teacher, Evelyn Tirado, 53, became angry and the fight began.

"And then she broke my book - I have it in my room. And then she snatched the book from my hand. We both went back and forth with each other. And then she threw me to the floor and started hitting me in my arm," said Aranza.

Tirado is a teacher at the Dr. Richard Izquierdo Health and Science Charter School in Morrisania.

Aranza's family says a New York City Police Department detective called to say Tirado turned herself in on a charge of assaulting a minor.

The school's Parent Association says the teacher is not allowed back in the school pending the outcome of the investigation.

NY1 went to Tirado's apartment on Monday to try to talk to her.

Her doorman says she wasn't available to talk.
