DOE Official Illegally Coordinated Lobbying For End Of "Last In, First Out"

By: NY1 News

A high-ranking education official is in trouble with his superiors after the Special Commissioner of Investigation found he asked parent coordinators to lobby legislators to end the "Last In, First Out" policy on teacher layoffs.

Lenny Speiller, seen above, the director of the Office of Public Affairs for the Department of Education, headed Mayor Michael Bloomberg's "get out the vote" operation in the last mayoral election.

This is not the first time Speiller has used city employees to do political tasks, which is a violation of the state constitution.

In 2007, he was fined $1,000 by the city's Conflict of Interest Board for asking staffers to work on City Councilman James Gennaro's 2003 re-election campaign.

Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott said in a statement, “I have spoken with Lenny and he understands that this cannot happen again, and moving forward we will work to ensure that DOE staff understand the appropriate standards to which we must all adhere."
