The state has reached a $1.6 million settlement with a company accused of stealing lunch money from schools.
The state attorney general said the Whitsons Culinary Group overcharged schools while participating in the National School Lunch Program.
Investigators allege that as far back as 2003 the company received discounts and rebates from vendors and failed to pass them along to the schools.
A majority of the affected schools are in Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester counties but two are in Manhattan.
The company says any overcharges to the schools were unintentional.
