Union employees, elected officials and parents gathered in Brooklyn Tuesday to protest the possible layoff of nearly 800 school workers.
Local 372 says the Department of Education is planning on handing out pink slips to schools aides, parent and community coordinators and health aides come October.
The union says it has lost more than 2,200 workers over the last three years.
They also say communities in Brooklyn, like East New York and Brownsville, would be hit hardest.
"They are cutting very crucial services that are very necessary for the education of our children. In addition to that they are cutting those services in communities that are already in need of social services and in communities where the unemployment is already too high," said City Councilman Mathieu Eugene.
The Department of Education referred NY1 to City Hall for comment.
