Some lawmakers want toxic PCBs removed from public schools immediately, instead of over 10 years as proposed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

They rallied along with parents and teachers at City Hall to put pressure on Department of Education officials and the Bloomberg administration.

City Council members revealed results from parent-led testing that they say has identified even more contamination of polychlorinated biphenyls in new areas of schools.

Their tests showed high levels of PCBs in caulk in addition to lighting fixtures.

"You must replace all of these lighting ballasts as soon as possible. Rapidly, do it now. We know the problem and we have the solution," said Manhattan Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal.

"Parents send their children to school because they think it is a safe place. Children eat within these eight hours, they have lunch, they have gym. This is about being able to participate actively in the health of our children's lives," said Queens Councilwoman Julissa Ferreras.

"I really genuinely believe this administration is providing some leadership on this issue by saying, 'We're going to do it.' 'We're going to do it in 10 years' is a recognition that it needs to be done. However, 10 years is far too long," said Staten Island Councilman Vincent Ignizio.

Government agents have so far inspected 16 schools around the city and all have tested positive for the toxic chemicals.

At P.S. 45 in Brooklyn, inspectors found high enough levels of PCBs to warrant removal.
