President Barack Obama says he knows firsthand the pain of bullying.

During a Thursday White House conference on bullying, the president said he was once teased for his large ears and funny name.

According to the White House, one-third of the nation's students, or 13 million children, have been bullied.

Obama said the problem is only getting worse because of online bullying.

"If there is one goal of this conference, it's to dispel this myth that bullying is just a harmless right of passage and an inevitable part of growing up. It's not," said Obama. "Bullying can have destructive consequences for our young people and it's not something we have to accept."

The White House says the Obama administration will continue to work on preventing bullying through government and private sector partnerships.
