Schools chancellor Cathie Black read to students at P.S. 182 in East Harlem on Wednesday as part of World Read Aloud Day.
Organizers said World Read Aloud Day is meant to motivate people of all ages to celebrate the power of words.
They said nearly 171 million children could be lifted out of poverty if they were taught basic reading and writing skills.
The chancellor said she enjoyed reading to the kids.
"This is what makes this job fantastic," said Black. "And also the whole premise of the day to read aloud literally around the world. I mean, what a wonderful and inspirational message to kids. I asked them how many books they'll read this year. One said 25. And how great that they read every night. I mean, this is what we need in our country, to improve all of the skills, but it really starts with reading."
"That was truly special for us to have her read to the children. The opportunity for the children to ask her questions, and just to enjoy her reading a book to them," said P.S. 182 Principal Andrea Hernandez.
