Students throughout the state could soon find themselves spending more time in the classroom.
The Board of Regents is considering extending the school day and the school year in an effort to boost the grades of public school students.
Under the proposal, the school day would increase to eight hours, and the school year would go from 180 days to 200 – essentially cutting summer break in half.
Any change to the school day or year would likely be a tough sell as school districts across the state are slashing budgets and laying off teachers.
The board is also looking into requiring high school students to score a 75 on math exams and an 80 on English exams, instead of the current 65 required to graduate.
