The city's most senior educator is soon retiring.

Eric Nadelstern, the deputy chancellor for the division of school support and instruction, says he is stepping down at the end of the month, after working at almost every level of the city’s education system.

He is credited with efforts to phase out low-performing high schools and replace them with new, smaller schools.

Sources say Nadelstern was disappointed that he was passed over both for the chancellors job that went to publishing executive Cathie Black, and then for the new chief academic officer position created to secure Black’s appointment.

That position went to a younger deputy, Shael Polakow-Suransky.
