Cathie Black continued her tour of the city's public schools today.
The incoming schools chancellor stopped by Hillcrest High School in Jamaica, where she discussed new initiatives for Queens schools with local and state leaders.
"With two weeks left, I'm ready. My sleeves are rolled up. I'm spending most of every day on the job, visiting schools," Black said. “That's where I really want to be. I want to hear what's on the principals’ minds. I want to hear what's on the teachers' minds, and getting prepped on all of the issues.”
“We have a great number of students who are excellent students, as well as great teachers,” said Senate President Pro Tem Malcolm Smith. “However, there is a tremendous amount of diversity that is in the schools, and in order for us to make sure that all students are properly educated, it was important for her to see that diversity."
Black also said she hopes to begin talks with the United Federation of Teachers as soon as possible, and went on to say she wants the most effective teachers in the classroom, and thinks all ways to loosen tenure should be on the table.
