Just days after the city announced plans to close more than two dozen schools, the state added 21 more schools to it’s "failing" list.

They must now make drastic changes to be upgraded.

This brings the total number of local schools on the state’s Persistently Lowest Achieving list to 43.

Each is eligible for up to $6 million o make changes, if the state accepts the Department of Education’s improvement plans.

The DOE says it will likely choose between two plans for each school. One involves removing the principal and bringing in extra help.

Under the other plan, principals are also let go, but at least half of the teachers are sent packing too.

Officials must reach an agreement with the teachers and principals' unions before using this strategy.

A few of the schools on the city closure list also made the state list, meaning they’re now eligible for these finds.

A DOE spokesperson says they will still try to get the funding, and use it for new schools to replace those that close.
