Citywide Campaign Spurs New Yorkers To Sign Up For GED Tests
City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and dozens of volunteers from the Bronx community group Mothers on the Move kicked off a citywide campaign to get more New Yorkers to sign up for the GED test and other free education courses.
The City Council is partnering with the Literacy Assistance Center, city Department of Education and the New York Community Trust to launched "GED Compass," a new website to alert city residents about the adult education system.
Officials say about 1.6 million New Yorkers over age 16 do not have their high school diplomas and are less likely to be employed, and that less than 2 percent of New Yorkers who need a GED take the test every year.
The City Council will also host adult education fairs in every borough this fall and combine outreach efforts with the New York Public Library, Brooklyn Public Library, Queens Public Library, the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs and many other city agencies and organizations.
